LADWP customers may be eligible, subject to program availability, for $1,000 to $1,250 per ton on qualifying central ducted, split, and packaged heat pump systems, or $1,500 to $2,500 per ton on qualifying ductless mini-split and multi-split systems that serve the entire home.
These increased rates apply to qualifying equipment purchased and installed on or after November 1, 2025, and the amount depends on the AHRI-matched system’s SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings. Qualifying central air conditioning systems receive $100 to $120 per ton. Burbank Water and Power offers $1,000 per ton up to $2,500 for standard customers, and up to $5,000 for income-qualified residents and affordable housing providers.
SCE offers a $75 smart thermostat enrollment bill credit, with up to $125 total available through ongoing participation. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C) applied only to improvements made through December 31, 2025 and is not available for 2026 installations.

Yes. Modern heat pumps operate efficiently at temperatures far below anything a Southern California winter produces. A properly sized heat pump provides both heating and cooling in a single system and, subject to program availability, may qualify for LADWP rebates of $1,000 to $1,250 per ton on qualifying central ducted systems, or $1,500 to $2,500 per ton on qualifying ductless mini-split systems that serve the entire home.
Set your HVAC system to recirculation mode to limit outdoor air intake, upgrade to MERV 13 or higher filters if your system supports them, and schedule a professional duct cleaning if smoke has entered your home. Affordable Heating and Air also installs whole-home air purifiers, such as iWave and REME HALO, for continuous protection against wildfire smoke and other airborne pollutants.
As a general guide, if your system is under 10 years old and the repair costs less than $500, repair is usually the right choice. If the system is 15 or more years old and a repair would cost more than half the price of replacement, replacement typically makes better financial sense, especially with current LADWP heat pump rebates available to offset the cost. Upon arrival, I assessed the homeowner's concern about the system cycling without producing cool air. The unit in question is a 2014 American Standard 4-ton R410A system. Inspection revealed that the outdoor unit was heavily soiled with dirt, debris, and surrounded by foliage, hindering proper airflow. The 7.5 µF condenser fan capacitor tested at 3.3 µF, indicating failure and potential intermittent fan operation. While operating, the system showed a temperature split that improved from 19.1°F to 24.4°F. I recommend replacing the failed capacitor, thoroughly cleaning the outdoor coil, and removing all foliage and debris around the unit to restore proper airflow and system reliability.
Recently, I completed a comprehensive service that involved diagnosing and addressing a persistent issue with a customer's HVAC system. Upon inspection, I identified a faulty thermostat and a clogged air filter as the primary causes of the malfunction. I replaced the thermostat with a high-efficiency model and thoroughly cleaned the air filter. Additionally, I performed a detailed inspection of the ductwork and refrigerant levels, ensuring everything was operating within optimal parameters. The system is now running smoothly, and the customer has reported a significant improvement in energy efficiency and comfort. This work is currently under warranty, with follow-up scheduled to ensure continued performance.
During the inspection, I identified several critical issues with the 5-ton Rheem system. The suction line was freezing, indicating a potential refrigerant leak. The blower wheel was heavily coated with dust and dirt, significantly restricting airflow. The outdoor contactor showed signs of pitting, and the capacitor needed replacement. I performed a thorough blower-wheel cleaning, replaced the contactor and capacitor, applied a leak sealant, and added up to 4 lbs of R-22 refrigerant. However, due to the system's age and use of obsolete refrigerant, these repairs are temporary. A full system replacement is strongly recommended.
Upon thorough inspection of the HVAC system, it was determined that the capacitor was faulty. As a first step, I safely de-energized the system to ensure a secure working environment. I then carefully removed the old capacitor, taking note of its specifications for accurate replacement. After sourcing a compatible capacitor, I installed it precisely, ensuring all connections were secure and properly insulated. Following the replacement, I conducted a series of tests to confirm the system was functioning correctly. The system was then re-energized, and performance was verified to be optimal. This meticulous process ensured the HVAC system would operate efficiently and reliably.
During the inspection, I found the outdoor HVAC unit had no R-410A refrigerant, indicating a significant leak. The capacitor tested fine, but the contactor readings were unstable, suggesting it needs replacement. The auxiliary drain pan showed heavy rust and condensate buildup, necessitating replacement. The primary condensate drain also required clearing and verification for proper drainage. Temporary repairs included replacing the outdoor contactor, applying leak sealant with UV dye, recharging the system to factory specifications, replacing the auxiliary drain pan, and clearing the primary drain line. Given the refrigerant leak and equipment condition, these repairs come with no warranty or guarantee. A full system replacement is recommended. The outdoor condenser and furnace were manufactured in May 2016, and the evaporator coil in August 2013.
