+1
Originally I had given 5 stars but I am changing my review because the permit Affordable pulled for the heater is not closed yet. It has been months since the job was finished and we thought everything was ok. Unfortunately the permit inspection was submitted wrong by the company and it has not been finaled by the city. We have reached out to the company a few times via phone and email for help and they have not responded. Exactly what we needed. Benji listened to our needs and gave us what we asked for. Jeremiah and his crew did an excellent job with installation. The Affordable team was exceptional at navigating Santa Monica’s permit process. We are very pleased with our affordable heater only option for our Santa Monica rental.

Juan was amazing. He is very knowledgeable and gave me several options for service. He even came out on a Sunday of a long holiday weekend and that was greatly appreciated. From diagnosing our issue to completing the repair, it only took about an hour. Super friendly and great attitude as well.

Jan was absolutely amazing! Our AC broke unexpectedly, and Jan was able to come out on very short notice. He was professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly kind throughout the entire process. He quickly diagnosed the issue, explained everything clearly, and got our AC back up and running. We really appreciated how responsive and thorough he was, especially given how stressful it is to have your AC go out unexpectedly. It’s rare to come across someone who is this reliable and genuinely takes pride in their work. We are so grateful to Jan for helping us out and would highly recommend him to anyone needing HVAC service!

What a Tune-up Actually is (and isn't)

People often group three different service calls under “AC service.” Mixing them up can waste time when you call, and sometimes lead to extra costs.

A tune-up is regular maintenance for a working system. Nothing is broken yet. The goal is to catch small problems before they become more serious ones and keep your AC running efficiently.

Repairs are needed when something has gone wrong. Maybe your system isn’t cooling, it’s making strange noises, or it has tripped a breaker. If that’s your situation, check out our AC repair in Chatsworth page.

Installation means replacing your system completely, usually because repairs are no longer cost-effective or the equipment is too old. For more on this, visit our AC installation in Chatsworth page.

Tune-ups come before repairs or replacements. If you do it regularly, you won’t need repairs or new systems as often.

What Happens During an AC Tune-Up Visit?

A tune-up involves more than changing a filter. Here’s what the technician actually checks, organized by system components.

Outdoor Unit

The technician cleans the condenser coil. After a season of dust, pollen, and wildfire ash, the coil can’t dissipate heat as well, so your system has to work harder. The refrigerant charge is checked using superheat and subcooling measurements, not just by looking at a pressure gauge. This is critical because the charge level affects how well your AC cools and the compressor works.

Indoor Unit and Airflow

The technician checks the evaporator coil and blower assembly for any buildup that restricts airflow. Airflow problems are a common reason why a system runs all the time but doesn’t cool the house. The compressor might be working, but if not enough air moves across the coil, the cold refrigerant can’t do its job.

Electrical and Safety Checks

Capacitors and contactors — usually the first components to fail in hot weather – are tested while the system is running, not just looked at. The technician also checks electrical connections for corrosion or looseness, which is common after a long, hot summer in the Valley.

Controls and Documentation

The technician calibrates the thermostat and checks the condensation drain for clogs. You should also get a written summary of what was found, not just a quick verbal update.

What a Tune-Up Costs in Chatsworth

A single tune-up visit starts at $69. This price includes the full inspection described above, not a basic or limited check.

If you don’t want to worry about scheduling every year, our Care Club membership includes two visits each year, in the spring and fall. You also get priority scheduling during the busy summer months, discounts on repairs, and extended warranty coverage.

Plans cost $179 (Essential), $299 (Comfort), or $599 (Elite), depending on the coverage you choose. You can pay monthly or all at once.

If your home uses AC for six to eight months each year, like most homes in Chatsworth, it’s a wise idea to compare membership plans. This is rather than assuming a single yearly visit is always cheaper.

If the Technician Finds Something

Sometimes a tune-up finds a problem that maintenance alone can’t fix, like a failing capacitor, a slightly low refrigerant level, or a corroded connection. If this happens, the technician should explain what it means and your options, without pressuring you to buy extra services during your maintenance visit.

A few signs are worth mentioning before your visit, since they change what the technician looks for first:

  • The system runs longer than it used to for the same temperature drop.
  • One or two rooms are noticeably warmer than the rest of the house.
  • You notice an unusual sound, like clicking, buzzing, or a noise that wasn’t there before.
  • The system cycles quickly, turning on and off more often than normal.
  • Energy bills have crept up without explanation.

None of these signs always means something is broken. But it’s helpful to mention them at the start of your visit so the technician knows what to check first.

How Often Does a Chatsworth System Need This?

Once a year is the minimum, and it’s advisable to schedule it in the spring before the cooling season begins. Because Chatsworth summers are long, systems that run six to eight months a year wear out faster than those in milder climates.

Twice a year—once before the cooling season and once before the heating season—may be an excellent idea if your system runs a lot, if you have pets, if you have nearby construction, or if you have recent wildfire smoke.

Ash and dust can build up in the coils and filters, and a single yearly visit might not catch it all. That’s why Care Club offers two visits each year.

Why Skipping This Ends Up Costing More

A neglected system usually fails at the most inconvenient time. Dirty coils and low refrigerant levels force the compressor to work harder and longer, shortening its life. Parts that are already stressed, such as a capacitor operating outside its limits or a corroding connection, usually fail when the system is under the most pressure.

In Chatsworth, that means during the hottest week of summer, not on a mild day in April.

The math is simple: A $69 maintenance visit is planned and affordable. Emergency repairs during a heat wave are not. Replacing your AC after a compressor failure is an even more complex and expensive project.

Efficiency and Lifespan

A system with clean coils, the correct refrigerant charge, and unrestricted airflow works closer to its original efficiency. If you skip maintenance, your system will drift further from that standard each season. You’ll notice longer run times and higher bills, even before anything breaks.

The same idea applies to how long your system lasts. Most systems don’t fail from one big problem. Instead, they wear out faster from years of working too hard due to delayed maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the difference between an AC tune-up and an AC repair?

A tune-up is scheduled maintenance on a working system – the goal is prevention. A repair addresses a system that’s already failed or has an active problem. If your AC isn’t cooling or is making unusual noises right now, that’s a repair call, not a tune-up.

Condenser coil cleaning, refrigerant charge verification, capacitor and contactor testing under load, electrical connection inspection, evaporator coil and airflow checks, condensation drain clearing, and thermostat calibration. You should receive a written summary of findings at the end of the visit.

A standalone visit starts at $69. Care Club membership includes two tune-ups per year, plus priority scheduling, discounted repair rates, and extended warranty coverage, with plans ranging from $179 to $599 annually, depending on the level of coverage.

At least once a year, ideally in the spring before the cooling season begins. Twice a year is worth considering for systems under heavy use, in homes with pets or nearby construction, or after periods of wildfire and smoke exposure.

It reduces the odds by catching components that are wearing out before they fail outright — but it can’t guarantee prevention of every possible failure. Some parts fail without warning regardless of their maintenance history.

You’ll be told directly what was found and what it means, with the repair as a separate decision — not bundled into the maintenance visit as an assumed yes. A tune-up identifies issues; it doesn’t obligate you to fix them on the spot.

Yes, to a degree, cleaning the coil and checking the filter addresses accumulated ash and particulate matter. If smoke exposure is significant, a more extensive duct inspection may be worth considering alongside the tune-up.

That’s exactly when it’s most useful. A tune-up is designed to catch problems before they’re noticeable, not after. Waiting until something feels wrong usually means you’ve moved from maintenance to repair territory.
