Upon arrival, I assessed the system and found it was operational. The customer highlighted that the airflow in the master bedroom was significantly weaker compared to other areas. I inspected the vent and discovered the damper was closed, which I promptly opened, resulting in improved airflow but still lower than desired. Further investigation revealed no collapsed ducts but noted the absence of balancing dampers, which are essential for proper airflow distribution. Additionally, I identified an improperly installed dryer vent, which was discharging lint and debris under the home, posing potential safety and airflow issues. I recommended replacing and properly sizing the ductwork to enhance airflow balance and correcting the dryer vent termination to prevent contamination and ensure safety.

Diagnostic

I successfully replaced the existing thermostat with a new Carrier model. The process involved carefully removing the old thermostat, labeling and disconnecting the wires, and mounting the new unit. I ensured all connections were secure and tested the new thermostat to confirm proper functionality. The new Carrier thermostat offers enhanced features and improved energy efficiency, providing better climate control.

I returned to address a cooling issue where the system was blowing warm air. The thermostat indicated a cooling demand, and the outdoor condenser contactor was engaging, but the outdoor fan and compressor were not operating. The breaker was tripped and reset, but it tripped again. Electrical diagnostics on the outdoor unit revealed that the compressor windings were within expected range. After isolating the issue by removing the compressor from the circuit, the condenser fan motor was found to be seized. The seized condenser fan motor was replaced, and the system was tested. Both the condenser fan and compressor started properly, and the system began cooling. Future issues may arise, but the system is currently operational.

We replaced three deteriorated supply ducts in the rear portion of the home with new insulated R-8 flex duct to improve airflow and comfort. The old ducts were restricted, contributing to poor airflow in the rear bedrooms. The new ductwork was installed, sealed, and supported according to manufacturer standards. During the repair, we also inspected the remaining duct system and found the supply plenum uninsulated, causing heat gain in the attic. The return configuration is original and could benefit from modernization. The homeowner chose to complete only the airflow repair, but we recommended replacing the remaining aging ductwork and installing new insulated supply and return plenums for better airflow balance, efficiency, and comfort.

I conducted a maintenance and safety inspection on the 2016 Carrier heat pump. The system started up and cooled normally. The evaporator coil still had biological growth, necessitating a professional cleaning. Indoor electrical components were fine. Refrigerant pressures were 70 psig suction and 216 psig head pressure, but mild outdoor temperatures made accurate evaluation difficult. Recommend rechecking refrigerant charge on a warmer day and performing a thorough evaporator coil cleaning.

Pre engineering

Upon inspection, the drain lines of the units were found to be clogged due to heavily soiled coils. Both indoor mini-split air handlers required a thorough deep cleaning. Additionally, the bow out drain lines were addressed to ensure proper drainage and prevent future clogs. The coils were meticulously cleaned, and the drain lines were cleared to restore optimal performance.
