The biggest mistake in AC installation is choosing the wrong size. If the system is too large, it turns on and off too often, causes humidity issues, and wears out sooner. If it is too small, it runs all day and never cools your home properly. Both options waste energy and money.
We start every installation with a Manual J load calculation.
This takes into account your home's size, insulation, window area and direction, ceiling height, duct condition, number of people living there, and heat from appliances.
For example, a home in Chatsworth with a south-facing living room and poor attic insulation needs a very different system than a shaded bungalow in Santa Monica, even if both homes are the same size.
We also check your current ductwork. If the ducts leak, are too small, or run through a very hot attic with old insulation, just installing new equipment will not fix your comfort issues. We will let you know before installation day if you need duct changes or better insulation.
The AC market has changed a lot in recent years. Now, Los Angeles homeowners can choose from several types of systems, each having its own benefits. It is no longer just about picking a brand of central AC.
Central air conditioning is the most common choice for homes that already have ductwork. New central systems with 15.2 SEER2 or higher are much more efficient than the older 10-12 SEER units still found in many Valley homes. If your ducts are in good shape, simply replacing your central AC is usually the most affordable way to improve your cooling.
A heat pump gives you both cooling and heating from one outdoor unit, so you do not need a separate gas furnace. In LA’s mild climate, heat pumps work all year round very efficiently. LADWP offers rebates of up to $2,500 per ton for qualifying heat pump installations, which can mean up to $10,000 back on a standard 4-ton system. For many homeowners, a heat pump replacement now costs less overall than a traditional AC and furnace setup after rebates. Learn about our heat pump services →
Ductless mini-splits are great for homes without existing ductwork, room additions, converted garages, ADUs, or any space where adding ducts is not practical. Mini-splits let you control the temperature in each area, are very efficient, and run quietly. Learn about ductless installation.
We set up every system with your thermostat, including smart options like Nest, Ecobee, and others. We handle the scheduling, check that heat pump modes work correctly, and set up SCE or LADWP time-of-use rate features so your system runs efficiently from day one.
We want you to know what to expect. Here is what a typical installation looks like:
01
Before we arrive, you have already received a written estimate with the exact equipment, scope of work, permit costs, and total price. We confirm the installation date and arrival window.
02
We arrive in the morning, protect your floors and work areas, and then remove the old equipment. We check the line set, electrical connections, and drain routing for any problems that need fixing.
03
During installation, we set the new outdoor condenser or heat pump, connect the indoor coil or air handler, pressurize, braze, and test the refrigerant lines for leaks, connect the electrical, and make sure the condensate line is working properly. For heat pump installations, we test both heating and cooling modes.
04
For commissioning, we measure airflow at every register, check the refrigerant charge against the manufacturer’s specifications (not just by feel), calibrate the thermostat, and run a full heating and cooling cycle. We show you the temperature split numbers before we leave.
05
For permits and paperwork, we take care of the Title 24 permit application, schedule HERS testing if needed, and submit rebate paperwork for qualifying LADWP, SCE, or SoCalGas programs for you.
Most standard replacements are finished in one day. More complex projects, like duct modifications, electrical panel upgrades, or multi-zone ductless installations, may take up to two days.

Replacing AC systems in the San Fernando Valley is not always simple. Homes in Chatsworth, Woodland Hills, Granada Hills, Northridge, Encino, West Hills, and Santa Clarita have unique conditions that affect how a new system should be chosen:
Our Simi Valley branch at (805) 755-4074 offers the same installation services throughout Ventura County. Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks experience inland heat similar to the San Fernando Valley. Coastal communities like Oxnard, Ventura, Port Hueneme, and Camarillo need condenser units that can handle salt air, so we use corrosion-resistant coil coatings for these installations when needed.

For your 0 sq ft Los Angeles home, we recommend:
Homes built before 1980 often need 0.5-1 ton more due to less efficient insulation.
*Actual sizing may vary. LA's heatwaves may require slightly larger units.
Get a Free LA-Specific QuoteIf your current system still works but is not performing well, replacement is not always the best choice. Sometimes, a repair is the right solution. However, there are situations where getting a new system makes more sense:
The unit is 15 years old or more and needs a major component repair. Repairs are happening every cooling season. The system uses R-22 refrigerant, which is prohibitively expensive to recharge. Utility bills have climbed steadily, even though your usage has not changed. The system cannot maintain comfort during a typical Valley heat wave. You are planning to stay in the home long enough to recover the investment through lower energy costs and available rebates.
When replacement makes financial sense, LADWP rebates, financing options, and energy savings from a modern SEER2-rated system can make the investment easier than many homeowners expect.
Use our SEER Energy Savings Calculator to compare your current system to a better replacement.
SEER2 is the current efficiency standard. California requires a minimum of 14.3 SEER2 for new AC installations. LADWP heat pump rebates start at the 15.2 SEER2 / 7.7 HSPF2 baseline tier and reach the maximum of $2,500 per ton at 20.5 SEER2 / 9.1 HSPF2.
Title 24 — California’s Building Energy Efficiency Standards — applies to all permitted AC replacements. Requirements vary by climate zone and project scope. We handle permit applications, documentation, and HERS testing coordination as part of every installation.
Rebate availability changes. The federal IRA Section 25C tax credit expired December 31, 2025. TECH Clean California single-family rebates are fully reserved. HEEHRA rebates are fully reserved (waitlist only). LADWP, SCE, and SoCalGas utility rebates remain the primary active programs for 2026.

Most standard AC replacements are completed in one day, including equipment removal, installation, commissioning, and thermostat setup. Projects involving duct modifications, electrical panel upgrades, or multi-zone ductless systems may take two days.
Yes. All AC replacements in Los Angeles County require a building permit and Title 24 compliance documentation. Affordable Heating and Air handles the permit application and HERS testing coordination as part of all installations.
A standard ducted central AC or heat pump replacement usually ranges from $8,500 to $15,000 installed, depending on system size, efficiency tier, and project scope. Ductless mini-split installations range from $3,000 to $15,000, depending on the number of zones. After qualifying for LADWP rebates, the net cost drops significantly.
California requires a minimum of 14.3 SEER2. Systems in the 16 to 20 SEER2 range typically offer the best balance of upfront cost and long-term energy savings for Los Angeles homes. LADWP rebates scale with efficiency — higher SEER2 qualifies for higher per-ton rebates up to 20.5 SEER2.
For most Los Angeles homes, a heat pump is the stronger long-term investment. It provides both heating and cooling from a single system, qualifies for the largest available LADWP rebates, and reduces heating energy costs by 30 to 50 percent in LA’s mild winters compared to a gas furnace.
