Gas odor, smoke, sparking, a carbon monoxide alarm, repeated breaker trips, or major water leakage are safety issues — shut the system down and call immediately. If you smell gas, leave the building first and call from outside.
A system failure during extreme heat affecting an elderly, infant, or medically vulnerable resident is also treated as an emergency.
Common causes, roughly in order of frequency: a clogged filter restricting airflow, a failed capacitor, a dirty condenser coil, a tripped disconnect, low refrigerant from a leak, or a failing compressor.
Check the filter and thermostat settings first. If the system is icing, making unusual electrical noises, or leaking water, shut it off and call for diagnosis — running it in that condition risks compressor damage.

Weigh these together rather than relying on any single number: how often it’s failing, whether the compressor or coil is involved, what refrigerant it uses, whether the home was ever comfortable, and how long you plan to stay.
A single repair on an otherwise sound system is usually worth doing. Repeated failures, R-22 refrigerant, or comfort problems that predate the breakdown point toward replacement. Age is one input, not the rule — we’ve advised against replacing sound sixteen-year-old systems and recommended replacing eleven-year-old ones that were never sized correctly.

Usually, solar gain, inadequate return air, duct leakage, insulation, or a sizing problem — not insufficient tonnage. A bigger system rarely fixes it and often makes short-cycling worse.
The diagnosis is airflow measurement and duct inspection, not equipment replacement.
Restricted airflow, a dirty coil, a blower problem, or low refrigerant. Turn off the cooling and run the fan-only to thaw the coil, then call. Do not keep running the compressor with a frozen coil.
There’s no guaranteed lifespan. Installation quality, maintenance history, duct condition, coastal salt exposure, and how many months a year it runs matter as much as calendar age. Valley systems running six to eight months a year wear faster than national averages suggest.

Yes — the climate suits them. Modern heat pumps have full heating capacity well below anything a Los Angeles or Ventura winter produces, and they provide both heating and cooling from a single system.

A heat pump paired with a gas furnace. Controls choose the heat source based on outdoor temperature or operating cost. It’s often the right answer when your furnace is relatively updated, and you want cooling efficiency plus electrification without discarding working equipment.
Sometimes. Homes with 200-amp service usually have adequate capacity. Older 100-amp or 125-amp panels may need an upgrade or a dedicated subpanel. This is evaluated during the estimate visit, so it’s priced upfront rather than discovered on installation day.

Burbank Water and Power offers $1,000 per ton up to $2,500 for standard customers, and up to $5,000 for income-qualified residents.
SoCalGas lists furnace rebates based on AFUE and input capacity, requiring a qualifying ENERGY STAR furnace, licensed installation, and proof of permit closure. Funding is first-come, first-served.

Available options include SCE-area programs and 3C-REN single-family incentives for qualifying energy improvements. Eligibility depends on property type, measure, and current funding.
Eligible SCE customers may receive a one-time enrollment credit plus additional seasonal participation credits through the Smart Energy Program. First-year totals can be higher than later annual credits.

No. The Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Homeowners filing for the 2025 work should consult a qualified tax professional.
Sometimes. Each program has its own stacking, equipment, and application rules. Get written confirmation from each program before treating combined incentives as part of your budget.

Requirements differ by project type. Depending on the scope, an HVAC replacement may involve compliance documentation (CF1R), installation documentation (CF2R), duct leakage testing, airflow or refrigerant charge verification, and independent field verification (CF3R).
Note that low-GWP refrigerant rules come from federal EPA regulations, not Title 24 — these are separate frameworks that are often conflated.

Certain California HVAC projects require an independent third party to verify measures such as duct leakage, airflow, and refrigerant charge. The installer documents the work; an independent rater verifies it. This is still commonly called HERS testing.
Whether it applies depends on your project scope and existing system — it is not required on every job.
There’s no single number that applies to every installation. The federal minimum depends on equipment type, capacity, and configuration.
For most new residential split systems in California, the code minimum is 14.3 SEER2. That’s the legal floor, not a rebate threshold — LADWP’s heat pump rebate tiers begin at 15.2 SEER2 with 7.7 HSPF2 and scale to 20.5 SEER2 with 9.1 HSPF2 at the top tier.
Most Los Angeles homeowners land between 16 and 20 SEER2. Whether higher efficiency pays back depends on your usage, rate plan, ductwork, and how long you’re staying — ask for the AHRI certificate for the matched system rather than relying on a single advertised number.

It exists to prevent like-for-like replacement based on the old unit’s tonnage, which is how oversized systems that short-cycle and dehumidify poorly get installed.
Most new residential systems use lower-GWP refrigerants, such as R-454B or R-32. R-410A production ended, so new equipment is designed around the newer refrigerants. These are A2L refrigerants requiring updated handling and installation practices.
You cannot mix refrigerants or charge a system with anything other than what it was designed for.
Yes. EPA rules allow existing R-410A systems to be serviced and repaired, and legacy components remain available for servicing existing equipment. The refrigerant transition does not require you to replace a working system.
Whether replacement makes sense should be determined by equipment condition, repair history, and operating costs—not by refrigerant type alone.
Not for that reason by itself. If the system is failing, expensive to repair, or you’re already weighing replacement for other reasons, the refrigerant change is one more input. It isn’t a deadline.
They’re classified as mildly flammable, which is why installation, leak detection, and service procedures were updated. Equipment is designed and certified around those requirements. From a homeowner’s perspective, the system operates the same way — the differences are in how technicians handle it.
The EPA does not recommend routine duct cleaning for every home. It’s appropriate when there’s substantial visible contamination inside the ducts, vermin infestation, or excessive debris being released from registers.
Before recommending cleaning, the source of the contamination should be identified — if ducts are wet or the insulation is contaminated, repair or replacement is the answer, not surface cleaning.
The evidence doesn’t support the claim that routine duct cleaning prevents health problems or eliminates allergies. We won’t make that claim.
Duct cleaning removes accumulated debris from the interior of ducts. If you have a specific problem — visible mold, vermin, or particles blowing from registers — that’s a defined issue worth addressing.

Signs include disconnected or crushed flex duct, visible damage, poor insulation, significant airflow imbalance between rooms, or measured high leakage. Visual inspection plus leakage testing tells you more than duct age does.
The EPA recommends a MERV 13 filter, or the highest-efficiency filter your system can safely handle, with the system set to recirculate.
The caveat matters: a filter with too much resistance reduces airflow if the blower and filter cabinet weren’t designed for it. Confirm filter size, cabinet design, and static pressure before upgrading. We check this during service.
No. UV systems target biological growth in specific locations inside the equipment. They are not particle filtration and are not the solution for smoke or dust.
Twice a year for systems in regular use — before cooling season and before heating season. San Fernando Valley systems running six to eight months annually, in dusty conditions with recurring wildfire smoke, accumulate wear faster than systems in milder climates.
Measured work, not a vague point count: condenser and evaporator coil cleaning, refrigerant charge verification via superheat and subcooling, capacitor and contactor testing, electrical connection inspection, blower and airflow verification, condensate drain flushing, thermostat calibration, and a written report of findings.
Inspect monthly and replace when dirty. Homes with pets, nearby construction, or recent wildfire smoke need more frequent changes. Manufacturer guidance on your specific filter takes precedence over any general rule.
Manufacturer warranties commonly require proper installation and documented maintenance, but exact obligations vary by manufacturer and model. Keep invoices, model and serial numbers, and registration confirmation.
Often, yes — some manufacturers offer different warranty terms depending on whether the equipment is registered within a set period after installation. You should receive registration confirmation along with model and serial numbers.
The manufacturer’s warranty covers specified equipment parts under its own terms. A labor warranty covers contractor labor for a stated period. We offer extended labor and parts coverage up to 12 years, depending on equipment and plan terms. Registration requirements and exclusions vary.
Rare here, but cold snaps do happen. Insulate exposed pipes, let a slow drip run during a freeze warning, and keep your heating system functional. Our team can assess property-specific exposure during any service call.
