Heat pumps and some higher-capacity systems use more power than older 100-amp panels were designed for. We check this during the estimate visit, so you won’t get an expensive surprise on installation day.
West-facing glass and late additions create uneven loads that a single-stage system struggles to handle. Zones and ductless zones can often be effective in this situation.

Heat pumps are now a strong option here, mainly because LADWP’s rebate structure favors them. For some projects, the net cost after rebate is lower than a similar AC-only replacement, even if the sticker price is higher. For rooms without ducts, ductless mini-splits usually beat extending ductwork into spaces never designed for it.
The 2025 Energy Code applies to permits issued on or after January 1, 2026. That affects documentation and, on some projects, field verification testing.
R-410A is no longer produced. Currently, most systems use low-GWP refrigerants, usually R-454B or R-32. These A2L refrigerants require updated handling and installation practices. There’s no need to worry or rush to a replacement, but the equipment sold today is different from what was installed five years ago.
SEER2 is the current efficiency metric. California’s code minimum for new residential systems is 14.3 SEER2. LADWP’s rebate tiers start at 15.2 SEER2 with 7.7 HSPF2 and rise from there. These are two different numbers that are often confused. High efficiency can pay off over Chatsworth’s long cooling season. However, the savings depend on your usage and rate plan, and not on a set percentage anyone can promise upfront.

We don’t promise a set number of hours because the real answer depends on the scope of work. A simple changeout and a project that involves ductwork and electrical panel work are very different jobs. What stays the same is the sequence:
