AC Repair in Granada Hills, CA

When your AC fails, it usually gives you no warning. You might notice warm air, odd noises, or a system that keeps shutting off. However, these signs alone don’t reveal the real problem or how to fix it. This page explains how we diagnose AC issues, so you know what to expect instead of waiting for a technician to guess.

Javier was a great technician! He explained everything thoroughly and answered all my questions. I ask a lot of questions!! He was very thorough with his inspection & patient as I explained how to find my house. He didn’t impart any judgement and I could tell he genuinely just wanted to help. When it comes time to replace my 48 year old unit, I’ll know who to call. Thanks!

Excellent experience getting our furnace/AC system replaced from one that was poorly sized and installed to a heat pump perfect for our family. A complete team effort from Ryan right-sizing the system for our home, to Alfredo handling things in the office, and to Rogelio & Rigo’s exceptional craftsmanship during install. Thanks again!

We had our 6 month maintenance appointment with Freddy today. He checked the condenser and aur handler subsystems to make sure they worked properly. Freddy is knowledgeable, efficient and personable. He liked our cat. Freddy noticed that we had closed some of the vents all the way and he warned us that is bad for the system, so now we are leaving all the vents at least partially open. He also warned us that we should install a surge protector to safeguard the condenser subsystem against power spikes, so now we are looking into it. There was one issue with the Maintenance call —though it’s not Freddy’s fault: he did not replace the air filters, as they don’t carry the right size (10”x30” and 10”x24”) This makes no sense, as Affordable installed those filters 6 months ago with the system! Air filter replacement is kind of the main point of the maintenance call, so I’m not happy. Now I have to go out and buy the filters myself. I think Affordable should reimburse me for the cost of the filters.

Three Ways an AC System Fails

Most repair calls fit into one of three main patterns, and each suggests different possible causes.

Running, But Not Cooling

The system turns on, and the air moves, but your house isn’t cooler. This usually means something interrupts the cooling process, like low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty condenser coil that can’t release heat, or a struggling compressor. Airflow might seem normal even when the cooling part isn’t working.

Not Turning On At All

If the thermostat doesn’t respond or the outdoor unit is silent, it’s often an electrical issue. It could be a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor, a malfunctioning contactor, or a safety switch that shuts the system down for a reason. You should check before resetting. A system that won’t start isn’t always more of a problem than one that’s running poorly—sometimes it’s a quick fix.

Running Constantly or Short-Cycling

Sometimes the system never shuts off, or turns on and off in short bursts. If it runs constantly, it usually means the system can’t keep up, often because of restricted airflow or a size problem. Short-cycling often comes from a thermostat issue, a refrigerant problem, or an electrical part that fails to turn on and off.

When you call, let us know which of these three patterns you notice. This will enable us to prepare and bring the right tools and parts for your visit.

Same-Day AC Repair in Granada Hills, or a Big Project?

Many common AC problems can be fixed quickly. For example, a failed capacitor or bad contactor can often be found and replaced in one visit. Refrigerant leaks take more time because you must find and fix the actual leak, not just add more refrigerant. Otherwise, the problem will return in a few weeks or months.

Compressor failures are different. The compressor is the most expensive part of the system, and when it fails, repair costs can approach a full replacement. We’ll be honest about whether repair or replacement makes more sense, instead of recommending the more expensive option.

When Repair Isn't the Right Call Anymore

Repairs are an excellent choice for one-time problems with a system that otherwise works well. It doesn’t make sense if repairs keep happening, if repair costs are a big part of what replacing the system would cost, or if your house was never a comfortable place before this breakdown. That last situation often means there’s a sizing or ductwork problem that a repair can’t solve.

If you’re in that situation, our AC installation page explains what a replacement project includes. It also covers current LADWP rebate options, which can lower your costs more than most repair-versus-replace calculators show.

What an AC Repair Visit in Granada Hills Involves

During a diagnostic visit, we find the real cause instead of guessing and replacing parts. This usually involves checking refrigerant levels and pressures, testing electrical parts while the system is running, and making sure air flows properly across the coil. The diagnostic fee is $95 and is credited toward any repair you approve, so you don’t pay twice for the same visit.

After we find the cause, you’ll receive a written quote before we begin the repair work. If we find another issue, like a second failing part, we’ll explain it separately instead of assuming you want it fixed automatically.

Rebates and Granada Hills' Utility Territory

LADWP provides electricity and water in the Granada Hills. This matters if you consider replacing your AC, because LADWP offers rebates for certain heat pump installations. Right now, you can get $1,000 to $1,250 per ton for central ducted systems and $1,500 to $2,500 per ton for qualifying ductless systems that serve the entire home, depending on efficiency.

These rebates don’t apply to repairs, but they’re helpful to know if repair costs are prompting replacement. Check California HVAC rebates for the latest details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does AC repair cost in Granada Hills?

The diagnostic fee is $95 and credited toward any repair you approve. The total cost depends on the problem—a capacitor or contactor replacement is a minor repair, while compressor or major refrigerant work costs much more. We always give you a written quote before starting any repair.

This usually means something interrupts the cooling process, not the airflow. It could be low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty condenser coil, or a struggling compressor. A diagnostic visit will find the real cause instead of guessing.

It depends on the situation. If your system works well and just needs one repair, it’s worth fixing. But if repairs keep happening, or the cost is close to a new system, it’s probably time to consider replacement.

Many common repairs, like fixing capacitors, contactors, or electrical problems, can often be diagnosed and completed in one visit. More complex issues, such as finding a refrigerant leak, may take longer to fix properly.

At least once a year, ideally in the spring before the cooling season starts. Twice a year, in spring and fall, is an excellent idea for systems that get heavy use or for homes with pets or nearby construction.

Call for service right away instead of waiting to see if it fixes itself. Demand for HVAC service increases quickly during heat waves, so calling sooner usually means you’ll be scheduled faster.
