Mini-Split AC Installation in Granada Hills, CA

Most mini-split conversations start with a specific room, not a whole-house decision. A converted garage that’s unbearable in July. A home office that was never part of the existing ductwork. A bonus room over the garage that runs ten degrees hotter than the rest of the house.

This page covers what mini-split systems actually solve, how they differ from extending central AC, and where they make sense in Granada Hills homes.

+1
Originally I had given 5 stars but I am changing my review because the permit Affordable pulled for the heater is not closed yet. It has been months since the job was finished and we thought everything was ok. Unfortunately the permit inspection was submitted wrong by the company and it has not been finaled by the city. We have reached out to the company a few times via phone and email for help and they have not responded. Exactly what we needed. Benji listened to our needs and gave us what we asked for. Jeremiah and his crew did an excellent job with installation. The Affordable team was exceptional at navigating Santa Monica’s permit process. We are very pleased with our affordable heater only option for our Santa Monica rental.

Juan was amazing. He is very knowledgeable and gave me several options for service. He even came out on a Sunday of a long holiday weekend and that was greatly appreciated. From diagnosing our issue to completing the repair, it only took about an hour. Super friendly and great attitude as well.

Jan was absolutely amazing! Our AC broke unexpectedly, and Jan was able to come out on very short notice. He was professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly kind throughout the entire process. He quickly diagnosed the issue, explained everything clearly, and got our AC back up and running. We really appreciated how responsive and thorough he was, especially given how stressful it is to have your AC go out unexpectedly. It’s rare to come across someone who is this reliable and genuinely takes pride in their work. We are so grateful to Jan for helping us out and would highly recommend him to anyone needing HVAC service!

What is a Mini-Split AC System?

A mini-split system connects an outdoor compressor to one or more indoor air-handling units via a refrigerant line rather than ductwork. Each indoor unit cools and heats the specific room or zone where it’s installed, operating independently of the rest of the house.

This is the main difference from central AC. Mini-splits don’t need ductwork, and no single thermostat manages comfort throughout the home.

The Zoning Advantage, Explained

Central AC treats the whole house as one zone. There is one thermostat and one target temperature, so every room gets the same setting. This is why a home office might freeze while a converted garage nearby stays warm.

Mini-split systems work differently. Each indoor unit has its own control. This means a room that gets more sun, has more equipment, or just needs a different temperature can be set separately from the rest of the house. You do not need a separate ducted system to do this.

This matters most in additions and converted spaces, but it’s also useful in homes where certain rooms always run hotter or colder than the thermostat’s target.

Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone: Pairing the System with the Problem

A single-zone system connects one outdoor unit to one indoor unit — the straightforward choice when the issue is one specific room or space.

A multi-zone system connects one outdoor unit to two, three, or more indoor units, each independently controlled. This fits situations where several rooms need coverage, but running full ductwork isn’t practical or cost-effective.

The right choice comes down to how many distinct spaces actually need their own climate control, not just the overall area.

Where Mini-Split AC Installation Makes Sense in Granada Hills

Converted Garages and Additions

Spaces that were never part of the current ducting system are the most common reason to install a mini-split. Adding existing ductwork to a converted space is often more disruptive and expensive than installing a dedicated mini-split.

Rooms with Central Air Never Handled Well

Some rooms run consistently warmer or cooler than the rest of the house, regardless of the system settings. This is usually due to duct routing, sun exposure, or the room’s position relative to the ductwork. A mini-split can correct this without redesigning the whole duct system.

Home Without Ductwork at All

Some older properties and certain unit types were never built with central ducted systems. A multi-zone mini-split can cover the home without the cost and disruption of installing ductwork from scratch.

Mini-Split Installation Considerations in the Granada Hills

Electrical Capacity

Mini-split systems, particularly multi-zone setups, draw more power than single window units. Panel capacity is checked during assessment rather than discovered mid-installation.

Mounting Location and Line-Set Routing

Indoor units need a location with reasonable airflow across the room. The refrigerant line connecting indoor and outdoor units has routing requirements that affect where units can realistically be located.

Permits

Mini-split installations in Los Angeles generally require an electrical and/or mechanical permit and, in some cases, Title 24 documentation. We handle the permit application as part of the installation.

Efficiency and Comfort

Modern mini-split systems use inverter-driven compressors that continuously modify their output rather than turning them fully on and off. This usually leads to steady temperatures and fewer noticeable swings than systems that start and stop at full power.

Your actual energy costs will depend on how you use the system, how well the zone is insulated, and your rate plan. There is no single number that fits all installations.

Maintenance

Mini-split systems require the same maintenance as central AC, including coil cleaning, refrigerant checks, filter changes, and electrical inspections. In a multi-zone system, maintenance is spread across more indoor units. Our HVAC maintenance and Care Club plans cover mini-split systems just like central AC.

Equipment We Install

We install and service all major mini-split brands, including Mitsubishi Electric. The right equipment for your space depends on its size, insulation, and how you use it. We assess each project directly instead of always choosing the same manufacturers.

Rebates for Mini-Split Installations in Granada Hills

Granada Hills is served by LADWP. Qualifying ductless mini-split and multi-split systems that cover the whole home can earn LADWP rebates of $1,500 to $2,500 per ton. The top rebate tier requires at least 20.5 SEER2 and 9.1 HSPF2. These requirements are higher than the rebate tier requirements for central ducted heat pumps.

A single-zone system covering only one converted room may not meet the ‘entire home’ requirement for LADWP’s top rebate tier. We will explain what your specific project qualifies for. See California HVAC rebates for the latest program details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does mini-split installation cost in Granada Hills?

Single-zone systems typically range from $3,000 to $5,000. Multi-zone systems with two to four indoor units range from $7,000 to $15,000, depending on the number of zones, system capacity, and efficiency tier. A written estimate follows an in-home assessment.

For the area it is meant to cover, yes. A properly sized mini-split cools and heats its zones just as well as conventional air does for the whole house. The main difference is in the area size, not in the system’s ability. Single-zone systems are not meant to replace whole-home central AC.

Most modern mini-split systems function as heat pumps, providing both heating and cooling from the same equipment. Whether that eliminates the need for a separate heating source depends on the specific zone and how it’s used.

Single-zone systems are typically installed in one day. Multi-zone systems with three or more indoor units may take longer, depending on line-set routing and electrical scope. We confirm the predicted timeline during the assessment.

Generally, yes — an electrical and/or mechanical permit, and in some cases, Title 24 documentation. We handle the permit application as part of the installation.

Replacing your entire central AC with a mini-split usually means installing a multi-zone system that covers every room. This is a larger project than single-room installations. It is an excellent idea to compare this option directly with a traditional AC installation for your needs.

Indoor units are usually quiet during normal use. Inverter-driven compressors avoid the loud on-and-off cycling of older single-stage systems. The placement of the outdoor unit affects how much noise you hear outside the home.

Solve the Room That’s Never Comfortable

If there is a space in your home that central air never quite reaches, such as an addition, a converted garage, or a room that stays hot no matter what the thermostat says, a mini-split may be a more practical solution than redesigning your ductwork.
