Replacing a heating and central air conditioner is never fun. But very pleased with Affordable Heating and Air from beginning to end. The price was fair, the communication was exceptional, they showed up when they said they would, and Humberto and Axzel who did the installation were professional, pleasant, conscientious, and knowledgeable. I would recommend Affordable to others without reservation.

A+ for Affordable Heating and Air from start to finish. I had multiple in-home estimates for mini split AC units and I’m so glad I decided to go with this company. They work hard to earn your business, meaning I received a lot of follow up estimate emails, but I chose affordable heating and air because of my technician, Benji. He was honest, thorough and extremely patient with me through the entire process. I had a ton of questions before, during and after installation and he always responded swiftly. He’s the best, and he’s funny! The company stands by their work and their service, and their pricing was reasonable and comparable to other local companies. I highly recommend them and would use them again for other home projects!

Mauricio was a breath of fresh air during an extremely stressful time. He helped us out during an emergency call, one of our AC units went out during an extreme heat wave. He gave us valuable honest options based on our situation. Our vacation rental home being occupied with a guest and it was the during the extreme heat wave! They helped us resolve the issue on the spot ! In the end our guest was happy with the turn out and had quick AC cooling that same evening! Price was also VERY fair - especially with last minute emergency call. I called my cousin in a different state to verify and he agreed with their price, that was very fair and actually very competitive! Maurico worked very quickly during this heat wave outside under the sun and we are so grateful for him and the wonderful office team!!! Invoicing, quotes and overall communication was 10 stars service. I deal with a lot of urgent situations running vacation rentals and deal with a lot of service contractors ! So nice when they understand your situation and do what it takes to solve the issue! Picture below is before! After pic coming soon!

Gosh—there are so many good things I could say about Affordable Heating and Air, and it truly began with that first text message. It included a photo and let me know a technician was on the way with a personalized quote. Then Benji called to confirm—personally—that he was about 10 minutes away. I replied, “Yes, I know—and I’ll let you in since I know what you look like.” We laughed about it, but I could immediately tell this was a thoughtful, customer-first company. The moment I met Benji, his warmth and friendliness stood out right away. He genuinely wanted to understand what our family needed and what we were hoping for with our HVAC system. He was patient, thorough, and considerate—right down to being prepared with shoe covers (we’re a no-shoes household). We reviewed a few options together, talked through the pros and cons, and he even entertained one possibility that many vendors had previously told me was too expensive and not worth pursuing. Benji ultimately made that “nearly impossible” option work for us and kept everything affordable—apparently that’s not just a name, it’s how they operate. He measured carefully, walked the property, and talked through the logistics of installing a five-unit ductless mini-split system. He also made plans to remove our old rooftop packaged system. He even understood our power company’s rebate program, helping us make the “affordable” part go even further. And that was just the quote process. Benji also helped us understand the payment options, including the financing program they offer. When it came to pricing details, he even brought the owner, Donna, onto the phone so we could fully understand everything. From start to finish, everyone we encountered felt genuinely nice, respectful, and welcoming—and we never once felt pressured or overlooked. We felt comfortable, appreciated, and most importantly, heard. A few days later, Benji returned with a team that specialized in mini-splits—and they were absolutely spectacular. They were a team of four who worked together so smoothly, like a well-orchestrated performance. The entire installation was completed in a single day (though it was a long one)—there was so much done, and I was truly amazed they managed it all. And it happened just in time, right before the latest heatwave hit—today’s high was 98! Our family is thrilled with our new mini-split system. More than that, I’m genuinely grateful to Affordable Heating and Air for helping bring our vision to life—from the first thoughtful message to the final results. Thank you, and especially thank you, Benji, Donna and Davide & team, for making this such a positive experience for our home.

When a System Won’t Start

If the thermostat doesn’t respond or the indoor or outdoor unit stays silent, it’s usually an electrical issue. This could be a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor, a malfunctioning contactor, or a safety switch that shuts the system down for a reason you should find before turning it back on.

If your system buzzes when it starts but the outdoor fan doesn’t spin, you’re not alone—this is one of our most common summer repair calls. It usually means that the capacitor, which stores the charge needed to start the compressor and fan motors, has weakened or failed. Capacitors can hold dangerous electrical charges even when the system is off, so it’s advisable not to open the unit yourself.

When Cooling Isn’t Working

AC Running But Not Cooling

If the system runs and air is moving, but your house isn’t getting cooler, something is interrupting the cooling process. This could be low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty condenser coil, or a struggling compressor. For AC repairs, check out our AC repair services.

Cool Air That Still Feels Sticky

Along the Oxnard coast, marine layer conditions increase air humidity regardless of temperature. This means your system might cool the air but not remove enough moisture, so the air feels cool but still damp.

This is called a latent-load issue, not just a temperature problem, and it’s critical to mention during a diagnosis.

Weak or Reduced Airflow

Weak airflow at the vents is often caused by issues with the ductwork or filter, not by the equipment itself. It could be a clogged filter, a duct leak, or a return that wasn’t sized correctly. This is a common problem that often isn’t an AC repair issue at all.

When Heating Isn’t Working

If your furnace runs but doesn’t heat the house, or won’t ignite, it could be an ignition problem, a dirty flame sensor, or restricted airflow. For more details, see our heating repair page. If your heat pump is stuck in cooling mode or defrosts too often, the issue is usually the reversing valve or the defrost control. This is not the ignition. Be sure to mention this when calling.

Noises, Odors, and Cycling Patterns

Unusual Sounds

If you hear an unfamiliar sound like clicking, buzzing, grinding, or a buzz that wasn’t there before, take note of it when you call. Different sounds can point to different parts of the system. A short dusty smell when you first turn on the system for the season is normal, but a persistent burning smell or a gas odor is not.

Short-Cycling

If your system keeps turning on and off in short bursts, it’s often caused by a thermostat problem, a refrigerant issue, or an electrical component that fails intermittently under load.

What Coastal Air Does to HVAC Equipment

This is where HVAC repair in Oxnard is truly different from inland Los Angeles or Ventura County.

Condenser Coil Corrosion

Outdoor condenser units are exposed to salty air all year in coastal cities. This salt speeds up corrosion on coil fins, cabinet fasteners, and electrical contacts, much faster than equipment wear in inland areas. It’s not a defect, just a normal effect of the local environment, and it happens even faster the closer you are to the coast.

Homeowners can rinse the outside of the unit with the power off and gentle water pressure. However, cleaning the coil itself should be left to a technician, since it involves working around refrigerant lines and electrical parts.

What This Means for Repair Decisions

A repair that’s simple on an inland system, like fixing a corroded contactor or fin section, can sometimes reveal that nearby parts are more worn out than you’d expect for their age. We always consider coastal exposure when diagnosing problems.

What HVAC Repair in Oxnard Actually Involves?

The Diagnostic Process

A proper diagnostic visit identifies the real cause of the problem rather than just guessing and replacing parts. We will check refrigerant levels and pressures, test electrical components under load, and ensure proper airflow.

The $95 diagnostic fee covers this inspection and is credited toward any repair you approve, so it’s not an extra charge on top of the repair cost.

After the Diagnosis

You’ll get a written quote before repair work begins. If we find anything beyond the original problem, we’ll explain it separately instead of assuming you want it fixed. We can usually fix things like capacitors, contactors, and drain clogs during the same visit since we carry those parts. Compressor repair often requires ordering parts.

Repair vs. Replacement

Deciding between repair and replacement depends on a few factors: how old and worn the equipment is, whether the problem keeps recurring, how complex the repair is, the system’s reliability and efficiency, whether parts are available, and what repairs might cost over time.

In coastal areas, corrosion is also a big factor. If the coils or cabinets are heavily corroded, a repair might only fix the symptoms and not the root cause.

Oxnard’s mild climate is another thing to consider if you’re considering a heat pump instead of separate furnaces and AC units. One system can often replace both and works efficiently in these mild temperatures most of the year.

However, whether it’s right for your home depends on your current equipment. If you decide to replace, our AC installation and heat pump services include everything you need, such as permits and Title 24 paperwork.

Emergency HVAC Service

If you smell gas, see sparks, notice a burning smell from electrical parts, have a breaker that keeps tripping, or your carbon monoxide alarm sounds off, these are all safety issues. Turn off your system and call us right away. Most other problems, like losing cooling during a heat wave, are urgent but not usually a safety emergency.

We offer 24/7 phone dispatch, so your calls will be answered and triaged at night or on weekends. Oxnard’s summer cooling failures are more common than winter heating outages.

Preventing Avoidable Problems

Regular maintenance catches small problems before they become unexpected repair calls. Coastal air brings extra salt and moisture, so filters can get dirty faster than in inland areas. It’s an excellent idea to check your filters every month. During wildfire smoke, use a high-efficiency filter and set your system to recirculate air.

Our Care Club maintenance plans also include a check for coastal corrosion before it leads to expensive repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does living near the coast affect the frequency of AC repairs?

Yes, it can. Salt in coastal air accelerates corrosion on outdoor condenser units, so coil fins, cabinet fasteners, and electrical contacts wear out faster than in inland areas. This doesn’t mean breakdowns will always happen more often, but it’s a real factor in Oxnard that isn’t as prevalent inland.

This usually means that something stops the cooling process, not the airflow. It could be low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty condenser coil, or a struggling compressor. A diagnostic visit will determine which one it is.

No, not by itself. Refrigerant systems are sealed and don’t use refrigerant during normal operation. If your system is low, there’s a leak. Adding more refrigerant without finding and fixing the leak will only return the problem, often within a few weeks

The diagnostic fee is $95, and we will credit it toward any repair you approve. The total repair cost depends on what we find. A small electrical fix costs much less than major repairs to refrigerant or ignition systems.

Yes, we offer emergency HVAC repairs for urgent situations, such as a complete system failure or safety concerns like gas odors or electrical problems. Our service is available 24/7, even outside regular office hours.
It depends on your system’s age, how often it needs repairs, whether the problem keeps recurring, whether there’s coastal corrosion, and what future repairs might cost. A proper diagnosis will give you the real answer.
You can check the California Contractors State License Board at cslb.ca.gov by entering the company name or license number. It takes about two minutes to confirm active status, C-20 classification, and bonding or insurance.
