Working in the Valley isn’t the same as working elsewhere in Southern California. After 20+ years of combined experience based in Chatsworth, here is what our technicians see on every job:
Chatsworth, Northridge, and Granada Hills regularly hit 100°F to 108°F in July and August, with heat dome events keeping temperatures above 90°F overnight. Compressors that are undersized, overdue for maintenance, or running on low refrigerant fail hard during these events. The right system, properly sized and regularly serviced, handles them without issue.
Most of the Valley was built during this time period. Original ductwork from that era is often cracked, disconnected, or so restricted it can’t deliver adequate airflow — undermining any system, no matter how upgraded, installed on top of it. Duct inspection is standard on every installation we do.
An under-insulated Valley attic is frequently the real reason an AC runs continuously and delivers uneven comfort. In contrast to a new system alone, solving the insulation problem first – or right away with a new system – produces better results dramatically.
When smoke moves into the Valley during fire season, it carries fine particulate matter (PM2.5), ash, and chemical compounds that standard filters cannot stop. I conducted a thorough diagnostic evaluation on a 5-ton AC furnace unit. The unit was operational, but it failed to shut off even when the system was set to the off position. I began by inspecting the thermostat settings and ensuring they were correctly configured. Next, I examined the control board for any signs of malfunction or loose connections. I also checked the wiring to ensure there were no shorts or breaks that could be causing the issue. After confirming the thermostat and control board were functioning correctly, I moved on to the electrical components, including the relay and contactor, ensuring they were engaging and disengaging properly. I will need to return to verify that the unit can turn on and off as expected and to make any necessary adjustments to the electrical parts.
I performed a comprehensive inspection on a 4-ton AC unit, identifying a significant leak in one of the coils. After assessing the situation, it was determined that the leak could not be repaired. Consequently, I recommended and executed the replacement of the faulty coil and converted the system to a heat pump. The total cost for this service was $1253.73, paid via check. A deposit was collected prior to the installation.
I recently completed a comprehensive heat pump conversion project. The work involved removing and disposing of the existing equipment. I connected the 115V/220V air handler to the existing electrical connection and installed a 4-ton 15.2-18 SEER Carrier inverter heat pump condenser. Additionally, I installed a 4-ton Carrier air handler, electrical service disconnect boxes, electrical whips, and a drain pan. I also installed a SS2 safety shut-off switch, 2030 thermostats, and new R8 ducts in the basement. The project included sealing all supply registers for HERS testing, installing new supply and return plenum boxes, secondary condensation pipes, and an electrical breaker. I ensured all work was completed with permits and HERS testing.
I installed a new Nest thermostat, ensuring it was properly connected with a dedicated common wire for uninterrupted power. I meticulously organized and corrected the low-voltage wiring, securing and capping all unused wires. The SS2 safety switch was accurately connected. I cleared the primary condensate drain line by blowing out any blockages and confirmed it was free of restrictions. The Nest thermostat needed additional charging before I could test its full heating and cooling capabilities.
My AC unit quit blowing cold air and a friend gave me Affordable's name. They gave me a two hour arrival window of 10am to noon and their technician Jeremy showed up at 10:15 with his assistant Jason. Jeremy diagnosed the problem in about 3 minutes, had the part (a capacitor) in his truck, and fixed it right away. Both guys were very polite, wore shoe covers to walk through my house, and even offered to change my dirty furnace filter if I had one available (unfortunately I did not). Jeremy was exceptionally knowledgeable and I will definitely ask for him again when I need HVAC service.
Upon inspection, the client's system was blowing warm air. I cycled the system to the cooling mode and observed its operation. After checking the refrigerant pressures, I found them to be low. Given that the system uses R22 refrigerant and is over 20 years old, I recommend replacing the entire system. I have sent estimates to the client for their consideration.
